Who we are

The short version

This policy explains what personal information Emily Goan (sole trader, trading as “Emily Goan”, based in Argyll, Scotland) collects through this website, why, and what your rights are. If you have any questions, get in touch at hello@emilygoan.com.

For the purposes of UK data protection law, Emily Goan is the “data controller” for the personal information described below.

What we collect

Information you give us

We only collect what we need to run the business and respond to you. Depending on how you use the site, this may include:

Contact form & email

Your name, email address, and whatever you tell us in your message, when you get in touch about lessons, live music bookings, workshops or pottery.

Newsletter (coming soon)

Your email address, if and when you choose to sign up once the mailing list is live. You can unsubscribe at any time.

Shop orders (coming soon)

Once the online shop is live, your name, delivery address, email and order details will be collected to fulfil purchases. This policy will be updated with full payment details before the shop opens.

Automatically

Information collected automatically

Like most websites, our hosting and WordPress software automatically log some technical information (such as IP address and browser type) for security and to keep the site running. At the time of writing, this site does not run any analytics or advertising trackers — see our Cookie Policy for the current detail, which we will update if that changes.

Why

How we use it

We use your information to:

  • Reply to your enquiries and arrange lessons, bookings or workshops
  • Process and deliver shop orders, once the shop is open
  • Send newsletter updates, only if you have asked to receive them
  • Keep basic records for accounting and legal purposes
  • Keep the website secure and working properly

We rely on your consent (for the contact form and newsletter), on taking steps to enter into or perform a contract with you (for bookings and orders), and on our legitimate business interests (for basic security and record-keeping), as the legal grounds for this under UK GDPR.

Sharing

Who we share it with

We do not sell or rent your personal information. We only share it with the small number of services that help run the site and business, for example:

Hosting & email

Our website host and email provider process data on our behalf so we can run the site and reply to you.

Payments (coming soon)

Once the shop opens, a payment processor (such as Stripe or PayPal) will handle card details directly — we do not store your card information ourselves.

Legal requirements

We may share information if required to by law, for example to comply with a court order or tax authority.

How long

Keeping your information

We keep contact form enquiries for as long as reasonably needed to deal with them and for a short period afterwards in case you get back in touch, then delete them. Order and invoice records are kept for as long as UK tax law requires (currently six years). Newsletter addresses are kept until you unsubscribe.

Your rights

What you can ask for

Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:

  • See what personal information we hold about you
  • Ask us to correct anything that is inaccurate
  • Ask us to delete your information
  • Ask us to restrict or object to how we use it
  • Ask for your information in a portable format
  • Withdraw consent at any time (for example, unsubscribe from the newsletter)

To use any of these rights, email hello@emilygoan.com. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you also have the right to complain to the UK’s data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk).

A note on children

Under-18s & early years classes

Fiddle lessons and early years music classes are taught to children, but this website itself is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children through the site. Enquiries and bookings for young learners are made by a parent or guardian, whose details (not the child’s) are what we hold for contact purposes.

Changes

Updates to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time, particularly as the shop and newsletter go live. The “last updated” date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent version.
